What powers Tapeline.
The kinds of data Tapeline uses, where each one shows up, and how often we update it. No black boxes and no vague “proprietary data” talk.
The Tapeline Score and its six factor scores are worked out with the method on how the score works. They are our own numbers, worked out from the data below, not copied from any one source.
Market data
Market dataWhat it’s used for
- ·Stock and ETF prices, daily prices (open, high, low, close) and trading volumes
- ·Trend and relative-strength calculations
- ·How big each heatmap tile is (bigger when more money trades)
- ·Finding the US stocks and funds that are trading, so new ones are added
- ·Daily closes for crypto pairs: every crypto score, and the price of the few pairs CoinGecko does not price
Where it appears
Every stock and ETF price and percentage change, stock and ETF charts, heatmap tile sizing, and the scanner's stock and ETF rows. For crypto: the daily closes every crypto score is built from, and the price and move of the few pairs CoinGecko does not price.
How often we update it
Prices are delayed about 15 minutes. Tapeline re-reads them for every covered stock and ETF about every 60 seconds during US market hours, and less often around deploys. Daily prices (open, high, low, close; used for trend and relative strength) are read about once a day. Crypto daily closes are also read about once a day, and a pair the daily pass misses keeps its last close for several days.
Crypto prices (CoinGecko)
Market dataWhat it’s used for
- ·The displayed price of most crypto pairs, and its change over the last 24 hours
- ·Not used in any score: crypto scores are built from daily closes
Where it appears
The price and 24-hour change shown for a CoinGecko-priced crypto pair: in the scanner, on the heatmap and on its ticker page.
How often we update it
Re-read about once a minute for the crypto pairs CoinGecko prices; a few pairs it does not price keep a daily close from Market data instead. Crypto scores are rebuilt about once a day where the data allows, so a score can be older than its price: each crypto page shows when its score was last computed, and a pair whose score stops updating leaves the ranked lists.
Fundamentals
Market dataWhat it’s used for
- ·Per-ticker financial ratios (P/E, ROE, margins)
- ·Revenue and EPS growth
- ·Debt / equity, balance sheet health
- ·Company classification (sector backfill)
Where it appears
The Financials tab on every ticker page and the company-finances check in the score breakdown.
How often we update it
Updated when a company reports its results.
Macro indicators
Public filingsWhat it’s used for
- ·10-year Treasury yield, the Federal Reserve's broad trade-weighted US dollar index (FRED series DTWEXBGS, not the ICE US Dollar Index, DXY), VIX
- ·Rate-direction classification (RISING / FALLING / SIDEWAYS)
- ·Inputs to the market-mood check in every score
Where it appears
The market mood on the dashboard's Today and Market › Mood pages. The market-mood check on every ticker. The Fear & Greed breakdown on the Mood page.
How often we update it
Daily readings: the VIX, 10-year yield and dollar index are end-of-day series, so the market mood and its check usually change at most once a day.
SEC filings
Public filingsWhat it’s used for
- ·Form 4 insider transactions (buys, sales, vesting)
- ·8-K material event filings (M&A, restatements, executive changes)
- ·Matching each SEC company number (CIK) to its ticker
Where it appears
Recent insider buys feed at /app/holdings. 8-K filings in the news feed at /app/news.
How often we update it
Form 4 read from SEC EDGAR, re-checked about every two days per stock (ETFs and other non-stocks about monthly). 8-Ks every 5 minutes.
Congressional disclosures (not available)
What it’s used for
- ·Nothing today
Where it appears
None. We don't currently have a real source of congressional trade disclosures, so we don't show any, and none feed the score.
How often we update it
Not applicable.
News wire
Market dataWhat it’s used for
- ·Headlines about each stock
- ·Headlines marked as good, bad or neutral news, for the news feed
Where it appears
The news feed at /app/news. Per-ticker news section on the ticker detail page.
How often we update it
Every ~5 minutes.
Analyst ratings
Market dataWhat it’s used for
- ·Consensus tally (Buy / Hold / Sell)
Where it appears
Analyst Ratings widget on Premium ticker pages. Not folded into the score — displayed as descriptive context only. Per-firm rating events and price targets are not on Tapeline's current data plan and are not shown.
How often we update it
Cached 12 hours per ticker.
Transparency note
Tapeline reads several kinds of market data, works out a score from six factors, and shows the result. The categories above describe what each input is used for and where it appears in the product. Where Tapeline displays a number that came directly from an upstream feed (a price, a P/E ratio, an analyst rating), the displayed value is the upstream value at the time of the most recent refresh. Where Tapeline shows a number it worked out itself (the score, the six factor scores, the signal label, the plain-English "why" sentence), that is our own work. What the score means is explained at /how-it-works. Tapeline is not a registered investment adviser. Everything on the platform describes stocks and does not give advice — see /legal/risk for the full disclosure.
